The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the Consumer Price Index for May showed an 8.6% inflation rate, a 40-year high. Food, housing and fuel costs are the main contributors, causing numerous Americans to have financial problems, particularly in Nevada.

After California, Nevada has the second highest gas prices in the country.

"Nevada earned the distinction Monday of having the second-highest gas prices in the U.S.," Las Vegas Review-Journal tweeted on June 7.

Nationally, there was an 8.6% all items annual increase, a 0.3% climb from May and a new four-decade high, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. After going down in April, the index for gasoline climbed 4.1% in May, up 48.7% in the last 12 months.

During April, the shelter index went up 0.6%, the biggest monthly increase since March 2004. The food index also went up 1.2% in May while the food at home index increased 1.4%. According to the Wall Street Journal, the CPI's 8.6% year-over-year increase represents the fastest pace since December 1981.

The Journal reports that May’s increase was driven in part by sudden spikes in the cost of energy, which rose 34.6% from last year, and groceries, which went up 11.9% on the year, the biggest increase since 1979. According to FiveThirtyEight poll results, President Joe Biden's approval rating currently is 39.7%, while 53.7% disapprove of his performance.

Nevada's gas average, which sits at $5.65 a gallon, is the second highest in the country and has risen 50 cents in the last month, according to AAA.

According to Fox News, Biden continues to blame the nation's inflation issues on Russia's invasion of Ukraine. After the Labor Department's inflation announcement June 10, Biden said the U.S. "has never seen anything like Vladimir Putin’s tax on both food and gas," Fox News reported.
