Among the 45 states that levy sales taxes, Georgia ranked No. 43 for its per-capita sales tax collections, according to a Tax Foundation analysis of 2018 tax numbers.

Georgia has a state sales tax rate of 4 percent. The amount it collects per-capita in sales taxes is $531, the study by policy analyst Katherine Loughead said.

Five states – Oregon, Montana, New Hampshire, Delaware and Alaska – have no sales tax. And most states that tax sales place levies only on products, while other states tax services as well, the Tax Foundation post says.

The analysis points out that although Colorado has the lowest state sales tax in the nation and takes in a relatively small amount of revenue per capita from its sales tax, the average local sales tax in that state is 4.62 percent. If state and local sales tax revenues were combined, Colorado would be in the middle of the ranking, the study says.
